Whatever You Do, Don’t Laugh! by Ashlee Ridlon is an interactive picture book that invites young readers into a misadventure with Bruno Bear. The story begins with the reader being asked to take Bruno on a walk while Deer runs an errand. There’s just one rule: whatever you do, don’t laugh. Bruno Bear is clumsy and full of enthusiasm. Dressed in his best birthday outfit, he sets out for a walk that quickly turns into a series of silly and unexpected mishaps. From falling while trying to pick a flower to stepping in something squishy, ripping his pants, and trying to fix his wardrobe with moss, mud, and vines, Bruno’s adventures are filled with giggles. Ridlon uses repetition and direct address to the reader engagingly, making children feel like they are genuinely part of the story. The use of humor is light and gentle, perfect for preschoolers and early readers who enjoy silly antics and physical comedy.
Manfred Calderón’s illustrations beautifully enhance the story, adding animated visuals that capture every tumble, muddy mess, and wide-eyed reaction. Bruno’s face is particularly expressive, and the pages explode with color and movement that match the story’s energy. Whatever You Do, Don’t Laugh! combines humor, friendly characters, and a clever premise, making it an excellent choice for getting kids excited about reading. Ridlon has crafted a playful narrative that celebrates friendship, laughter, and the small moments that make a birthday truly memorable. It’s a nice addition to a child’s home library and a fun story to read out loud.
