When Happily Ever After Fails by Courtney Deane is a delightful read for fans of women's fiction and romance. Abigail Gardner's dream is to teach children art and to encourage young minds to be creative. But the beginner teacher's disastrous experience with mischievous sophomore students almost ends her career. Abigail reluctantly agrees to teach the sixth-graders literature at Excelsior Primm, Philadelphia's famous preparatory academy. Abigail thinks that the tragic ending of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet may be too depressing for her young students. She allows them to change it to a happier one. It gives Abigail an idea for a school play. Her activity attracts the unexpected interest of a school custodian, Mitch. Abigail's handsome colleague, Nate Carter, also offers a helping hand. Will Abigail, whose late father was a prominent teacher, satisfy the school's ambition to stage a successful play? And will her bumpy relationship with Nate turn into something more?

Courtney Deane's When Happily Ever After Fails is a compelling novel. The appealing and humorous writing style helps us better understand the book's themes and the main character's point of view. Abigail is a profound character. She tries her best to lighten the burden of everyday difficulties for those around her and she is desperately romantic. The author crafts the main character with great love. Abigail's upbeat spirit and sensitive heart make her story uplifting and moving. The author demonstrates the relationships between parents and their children and sympathetically tells us that it may be hard to live up to the expectations of our parents. This is a stirring romance that the great William Shakespeare would appreciate. When Happily Ever After Fails is an enthralling story that offers a thought-provoking conclusion with a healthy dose of realism.
