When Mom Travels for Work by Kristopher James Goeden, illustrated by Csilla Szegedi, follows a parallel day in the life of a working mom and her family. While the mother leaves for a business trip, her partner and their children stay behind. The story shows the mother working hard while her partner manages the children and home. As it advances, the text explains that Mom works to make money so their family can have a lovely home and buy groceries. The partner is shown happily and competently shopping, caring for the children, and completing chores. The mother video calls her family at the day's end, and they say good night before going to sleep in their different locations.
The physical appearance of When Mom Travels for Work by Kristopher James Goeden is phenomenal. The color scheme, largely blush pink and gold, is constant throughout the book. This may have verged into monochromatism in the hands of a lesser artist; instead, here, the limited color scheme emphasizes the family's bond. As a working mother, I often feel guilty about spending so much time away from my husband and children, mainly because there are few healthy depictions of working moms in popular culture. I appreciate how this story explains the need for work and shows that just because their mom is traveling and working doesn't mean she's forgotten about them. I plan to read it to my children when they experience separation anxiety due to my leaving for work.
