When Science Goes Really Bad by Joseph Lupton is a collection of funny superhero stories about animal heroes who protect their world from crafty villains. In one story, Chicken Man has to deal with a trickster spreading a mind-control virus that forces the other chickens to turn against him. In another story, Pickle Man confronts a sneaky foe who changes people into evil pickles and causes chaos everywhere. Meanwhile, the Rat of Justice squares off against an enemy who uses shrinking gadgets and science to control his helpless victims. There is also a short Christian faith-based message at the end, along with a creative bonus story about living food. When it is all said and done, can these brave heroes stay one step ahead and keep their world from falling apart?

Joseph Lupton's When Science Goes Really Bad blends humor, basic science concepts, and light superhero action in a simple way that makes the stories very amusing. I really liked that the narratives were broken up into short adventures, so it never felt hard to keep up with the main characters or their various story arcs. The author throws in several playful jokes with science and tech terms, which makes everything more lively. The lessons about doing what is right and staying strong during testing times are inspiring and heartfelt. The heroes keep pushing forward, even when their situations get stranger and more challenging. The story maintains a consistent pace, which makes it entertaining from start to finish. Young readers who love silly humor, animal characters, and comic-style adventures will enjoy following these quirky superheroes.
