When the Lights Are Off by R.A. William is a powerful and inspiring audiobook that offers hope and comfort to readers still dealing with the effects of an abusive childhood and struggling to live through dark moments they don’t talk about. This memoir begins by describing William’s childhood in a dysfunctional family, his use of silence as a means of survival, and the challenges he faced while navigating fatherhood. He also shares his journey through the military, where he hoped to find healing from his past; however, after service, the silence felt heavier as he struggled with depression and anxiety. William further describes his path to restoration and healing, which started when he intentionally began facing the boy he used to be, forgiving even when apologies don't come, and more.
Listening to William's story got me emotional. I find it truly inspiring when people who have gone through a difficult past find healing and, instead of keeping their story to themselves, use it to offer hope to others and make the world better. I found most parts of William's story relatable and very similar to mine. This book provided me with the opportunity to reflect and release the older versions of myself that I had clung to over the years. The session that discussed forgiveness without closure appealed to me the most. This book would serve as a call to all parents to do better and understand how their actions can significantly impact the lives of their children. It features themes of mental health, self-awareness, hope, healing, trauma, and more.
The narration by R. Dennis Speck was brilliant and engaging, such that I connected deeply with the author's experiences. His tone was calm, clear, and steady with an amazing pace. This audiobook maintained a simple quality that was concise and easy to follow. The sound quality was also clear and free from distortion. Dennis's voice was fantastic; I could not get enough of it, and it got me hooked on the story. I recommend When the Lights Are Off by R.A. William to all parents and anyone seeking healing from their past traumas and pains.
