Where Is Blue Bear? is a children’s picture book written by Katie Specht. Oliver and his stuffed bear, Blue Bear, were the very best of friends. They did everything together. Whenever Oliver went into town with his mom, Blue Bear went along with them. They went to the library, the park, even to the dentist, as a team. Soon, however, Oliver would be going to school. His mom explained that Blue Bear would have to stay at home while Oliver was in class. She told him that she would take care of Blue Bear while he was in school. Then she suggested that Oliver try going to the library one day without Blue Bear. Oliver wasn’t at all interested in doing that and Blue Bear continued being both best friend and constant companion for the rest of the summer. Then something awful happened; Blue Bear was nowhere to be found. Where could he be?

Katie Specht’s Where Is Blue Bear? is a coming of age story for young readers. Many kids have favorite companions, just like Oliver’s Blue Bear, and the idea of having to leave that trusty friend at home for the first day of school can be upsetting. Oliver’s unsuccessful search for his missing Blue Bear seems to make going out without his best friend somewhat easier, especially since the shopping trip he and his mom go on is for school supplies. The illustrations are cheerful and colorful, and Blue Bear and Oliver’s friendship is beautifully portrayed. Specht’s story is a grand selection for storytime, especially for children wondering about their own first day of school. Where Is Blue Bear? is recommended.
