Where Rivers Run West by Will Colt is a brilliant historical novel. At the age of sixteen, Rory Fraser decided to make his dream of prospecting in Colorado come true. He left behind the Indiana farm he had worked with his father and older brother and traveled to Leadville, Colorado. However, life in a prospecting town was nothing like he had imagined. When he was thrown out into the frozen streets, with no place to go, his future took an unexpected direction. The following spring, he was driving a team and hauling raw ore. Overcoming incredible hazards, Rory created a name for himself. Over time, due to his hard work and cool courage in the face of danger, Rory’s reputation grew into a legend. Wanting to distance himself from the notoriety, Rory began to dream of having the very thing he had left behind in Indiana: a home.
Where Rivers Run West by Will Colt is an astounding period piece that depicts the Wild West from a young man’s perspective. I admired Rory and appreciated his integrity and strength of character as he matured and conquered the odds. The setting is beautifully portrayed, giving the story's atmosphere a genuine feel. From the first chapter, the story flows smoothly; it contains the perfect amount of drama, conflict, and resolution. I also appreciated all the details included in the story. For instance, how the wagons and horses reacted to the circumstances. The way they are portrayed adds to the excitement and drama of the scenes. The book is true to life and sensational, and I recommend it to everyone who loves authentic stories built on our history.
