Whispers in a Phone Booth by J. Daniel Reed centers around the lives of two Polish sisters, Helen and Martha. Against the backdrop of World War I, their mother decides to send them to America to keep them safe from their abusive, alcoholic father. When the two sisters emigrate to America, they are taken in by their aunt. In time, Helen meets and marries Peter, and they decide to raise a family together. Unfortunately, Martha distances herself from her sister and eventually vanishes from Helen's life, only to resurface nearly 16 years later. Wally, Helen's impressionable son, is fascinated by his enigmatic Aunt Martha, who has her own agenda for him. In light of recent robberies that occur in the area, no one can quite piece together what happened. Only when the characters' lives intersect do we understand what actually transpired.
