House of Desolation by Alex Webster is a cleverly layered and nuanced horror story set during the Georgian era in rural, aristocratic England. Sir Thomas Hargrave had surprisingly inherited Hargrave Manor from a childless bachelor uncle and now, with his new wife, Eleanor, was determined to restore the rundown estate to its former glory. Once the couple has moved into the old house, they quickly realize that the estate is almost bankrupt and a major effort will be required to restore it. But the couple are young, enthusiastic, and Eleanor’s parents, Lord and Lady Ashcroft, could be instrumental in assisting Sir Thomas with his plans for the estate. Before long, however, it becomes clear that the estate’s financial future is the least of their worries. Hargrave Manor and its new occupants are being haunted by what appears to be a violent and vindictive child spirit. Any hopes of a happy family for Thomas and Eleanor must await the unraveling of this supernatural mystery.

House of Desolation is a gripping and compelling story of how the past is always destined to catch up with us as well as shape and determine our current circumstances. Alex Webster has woven an intricate plot of deception and subterfuge to rival any historical mystery. The supernatural elements add suspense and intrigue to what is already a fascinating story. I particularly appreciated the ease with which the aristocracy of the time was able to explain away and gain absolution for even horrific acts of violence and abuse that may have occurred under their roofs. It truly was a time when a gentleman’s word was taken at face value and believed regardless of the unlikeliness of it being the truth. Thomas and Eleanor were an unusual couple in that they truly were a love match and had chosen each other, rather than marriage being a strategic play by the parents to improve position, wealth, and power. This loving relationship gives the characters' actions believability. The descriptive and character-driven writing style allows the reader to fully immerse themselves in Hargrave Manor and experience the chilling happenings alongside Thomas and Eleanor. This story succeeds both as excellent historical fiction and as a compelling supernatural horror story. I loved it and highly recommend it.
