Whispers: Extraordinary, Book 1 by Feather Chelle focuses on the diversity, inclusivity, and challenges that one experiences in life. This book is influenced by the life of the author who, like the character, Amber Cheyenne Douglass, grew up blind due to a cancer called retinoblastoma. As Amber and her best friends, Marie and Kat, enter the sixth grade, she experiences some anxiety because they will all be attending different schools. She believes that without the support of her friends, she will be unable to survive. Teen readers will take a walk through Amber’s life as she encounters the looks, chatter, and undertones that surround and influence her in school. As Amber goes through school, she is conscious of not only how others treat her but her response and how she treats herself.
As the story evolves in Whispers by Feather Chelle, readers will learn that the journey of a teen going through middle and high school can be overwhelming due to many hurdles. During middle and high school years, teens are pulled in so many different ways from self-discovery, dealing with a new environment, making choices for their future, learning from their mistakes, experiencing hurt, dealing with a broken heart, making wrong decisions, and determining the best route to take in moving forward in their lives, all while being criticized and not being included. Teens will learn a lot from reading this book and will discover that the obstacles that they face are not unique yet every experience is different. Just like Amber, teens must not focus on their shortcomings but instead concentrate on the best parts of themselves while learning and growing from everything that they’ve encountered during their journey which builds character. We must teach our children that some people can be cruel and desire to see others suffer but with self-love, developing a high self-esteem, and emitting confidence, the negative energy that was meant for destruction doesn’t make the intended impact.
