Who Do You Help? by Randy Knoewman is a stunning tale about making a difference. Mr. and Mrs. Jones won the lottery, but all the money in the world couldn’t help Mrs. Jones, and her parting words to her husband were that he should use the money to help people, as many as possible. He starts by hiring his local diner server, Linda, to help him. She’s a single mom, American-Asian, and just trying to earn enough money to get her and her son out of a place that has never truly accepted her. Things take a turn when Linda comes face to face with someone from her past, someone she hoped never to see again. Can Mr. Jones and Linda decide who should get the money, and can they navigate the small-town dynamics and prejudices that arise, reminding them that the town is still full of divisions?
Who Do You Help? by Randy Knoewman is an enjoyable read that explores the complexities of generosity and the barriers that get in the way. It is a humorous, heartwarming read with some amazing characters, each of whom has their own story to tell. The dialog is human, giving a real insight into their deepest thoughts, fears, and feelings, and there is plenty of intrigue with a few little twists along the way. We all like to think we’d know what we’d do if we won the lottery, but this book shows the hard decisions that must be made, the moral decisions, and the potential for prejudice along the way. I really enjoyed this book; it’s well-written and a lot of thought has gone into it. It is one of the most thought-provoking stories I’ve read – guaranteed to make you question one or two decisions you might have made in your life, all while enjoying a wonderful, humorous story.
