Why Can’t We Be Friends? by Charles White and Logan White is a delightful little tale of a cat and dog. As mortal enemies, the dog chases the cat, and the cat runs away. But what if one of them stopped to ask why? One day the cat asks the dog a simple, yet powerful question. “Why can’t we be friends?” To which the dog replies, “Chasing cats is what I’m supposed to do.” They continue in their lives, following the natural order until the dog finds himself in a bit of trouble. What will the cat do? Save the dog or run away?

Why Can’t We Be Friends? is quite profound if you look at it deeply. Not only is it about making friends with everyone (no matter their background), it is also about being kind and helping others. Everyone needs at least one friend and children are no exception. In fact, they are perhaps those who are most in need of a friend. Charles and Logan White have made an engaging book complete with a story, dictionary, vocabulary list, and coloring page. They understand the importance of learning how to read in a child’s early development and recognize the value of play. I believe my own children would benefit from Why Can’t We Be Friends? because it teaches so much in such a short number of pages. The coloring page and vocabulary list would help them to interact with the story and learn at the same time. It is a win-win!
