Wild Meat begins in Mexico. An old Guatemalan Priest sought Stephen's help in hiding and transporting sketches and documents from the Middle Ages to the United States. Fast forward three years to the jungles of the Congo: The CDC sends a team to investigate reports of a contagious fever in a logging camp.

Amy was investigating reports of loggers killing animals on the endangered species list. She came in contact with a strange animal that looked a lot like a chimp but had a tail, large eyes like a nocturnal animal, and strange rolls of skin on its face. The animal’s feet were elongated and had claws, as did its front paws. When the animal attacked the smell was horrible and then turned into a wonderful odor. There were those who would stop Amy’s investigation even if it meant murder.

Through her investigation Amy became aware of Stephen and the two of them began working together to discover the connection between the documents and the animal.

I’ve tried to be careful and not give away too much in this summary. I don’t want to spoil the plot for other readers. Wild Meat is a fantastic read. It reminded me a bit of the old black and white jungle movies of the early 1960s. I think they were called Rama but I’m not sure. I know that I eagerly awaited them on Saturday afternoons. I was also reminded of the book and movie by Michael Creighton called Congo. This book has it all: strange animals, a greedy business man, an assortment of bad guys and an understated hero and strong heroine. The plot is a cross between science fiction, adventure, thriller, horror, suspense and a touch of romance. I would suggest the author do a bit more editing. The plot was outstanding, and the characters were done well. Amy stands out as a courageous and delightful character.
