Wildcat: The War of the Hundred Thousand Ships by Adam Paulhus is an epic sci-fi fantasy that follows Natalie Annikki. Natalie is a young woman who dreams of flying among the stars, but with war on the horizon and tensions between empires rising, things are far from easy for her. Natalie enrolls in the interstellar navy of the Altherian Empire, known as the Omasye Space Council, to make her dream a reality. But her journey is complicated by a series of cryptic messages that reveal something deeply personal and upsetting: her father’s death was no accident. She's determined to find the truth and what really happened to her father, but this leads her into the largest space battle in human history. With danger at every turn and the weight of war on her shoulders, Natalie must get through it all to survive and prove herself as a true fighter pilot.
Author Adam Paulhus offers readers a breathtaking blend of military sci-fi and space opera in a great balance between action, emotion, and political tension. I really liked Natalie's character creation and development at the center of the plot. I appreciate a strong and determined female protagonist who captivates with her ambition and resilience, but still manages to feel deeply about the consequences of her actions. The storytelling paces the thrilling dogfights with deep emotional moments and gives both us and the characters time to reflect as they develop and grow stronger after every challenge. Excellent immersive world-building brings the epic space setting and interstellar conflict to life in vivid detail. Overall, Wildcat is a highly recommended read for fans of original and exciting science fiction.
