Will's Dream World by Will Nel is a picture book aimed at helping children enjoy their dreams as well as control their nightmares. It follows Will, a young boy, whose attitude toward his dreams is negative since they scare him. However, his father explains to Will that his dreams are his to control. He advises Will to view the dreams as silly thoughts. One night, the nightmares haunt Will as he is confronted with an enormous spider and pursued by wild beasts. He hears the cries of his sister as well as the taunting voices of bullies. Will is frozen with fear and feels already defeated. However, he thinks of his father's words, and he chooses to confront the nightmare that haunts him in the dream world.
Will’s Dream World is a motivating story that will transform the way you think about your dreams. Will’s story does not just apply to children; the lessons he learns can also work for adults. Will Nel’s narrative features rhyming phrases and simple words that children will easily understand. The story touches on bullies and being crippled by fear, familiar issues that trouble many children. It also has a hidden nutrition message, as it teaches kids that to become strong and intelligent, they must eat healthy foods. Suspenseful moments will make you feel like this is the end for Will, but an uplifting turnaround will make you cheer for him. These elements make the book great to read aloud and enjoy with family and friends. The vibrant illustrations perfectly complement Will's dream adventure. This is a fun read, and I highly recommend adding it to your children’s reading collection, as it will help them realize that they have power over their dreams and the choice to make them into fun, nightly adventures.
