Wind, Ocean, Grass by Karen A. Wyle is a gentle, beautiful tribute to the outdoors. It is written as a conversation between the wind and the grass. As the wind makes the grass ripple, the wind tells the grass that it reminds him of the ocean. The grass has no concept of the ocean, so the wind describes the ocean. It tells of the waves, animals, and smells. The wind also describes the many sights, smells, and colors of the waving grass. The wind relishes the fact that it can experience both the ocean and the grasslands. The accompanying illustrations are exquisite and highlight the natural wonders of both.

Wind, Ocean, Grass is an outstanding introduction to the natural world. Many picture books focus on different wildlife species, but not many focus on the earth's marvelous landscapes. The illustrations by Tomasz Mikutel are soft and dreamy. They add just the right touch to the rhythmic flow of the story. I love the picture of the dandelion that goes from bud to flower to seed and highlights the phrase "and the passing of time." Kids will immediately grasp the concept. Karen A. Wyle has done a wonderful job in writing an engaging story about our beautiful planet. The tranquil, appealing verse will calm and enchant young listeners. Even those children who haven't experienced the ocean or a field will be able to envision the moments found in each setting. This book will foster an appreciation of our planet's wild spaces.
