Whenever Gavriel Hall, the bastard son of Vernon Hall, the Warden of Everwatch, was summoned to his father’s country estate, his half-siblings—Princes Victor, Tannithan, Alex, and Princesses Anastasia and Hannah—knew the occasion was a death announcement. The siblings are dismayed to learn from their uncle, Duke Cletus, that Warden Vernon, their father, is dead. After laying him to rest, the siblings attend a royal court assembly for the reading of their father’s will. They are shocked when Alexander is named heir to the throne, contrary to what Gavriel, the scribe of Everwatch, had recorded in the original will, which declared Victor, the eldest son, as the Warden’s successor. To settle the growing dispute, it is agreed that the assembly will decide on the new Warden through a vote. However, this only plunges the royal family and Everwatch into more chaos and strife. Gavriel, intent on escaping the chaos, makes a pact with the Star Thief, a powerful witch imprisoned in the depths of the city’s mountain. Is Gavriel ready for what he has gotten himself into? Find out in Witch in the Wall (Book I) by Quinn Hogshead.

If you are looking for an epic dark fantasy flavored with mythical folklore, adventure, action, drama, and suspense, Witch in the Wall by Quinn Hogshead is a must-read. With intricate world-building, the author treats readers to a plot filled with spell-binding cliffhangers and jaw-dropping plot twists. The storyline unfolds through Gavriel’s eyes, which allowed me to interact with the claustrophobic medieval world and unpredictable cast. The narration, the cinematic scenes, and the lively, tense conversations, often entwined with witty commentary, made for a refreshing and entertaining tale. All the characters are complex, and most of their deeds, however evil, seem rooted in justifiable causes, ranging from Gavriel to The Star Thief, the legendary villain herself. This pageturner is a terrific debut in a fantasy series. I loved it and will be on the lookout for the next installments.
