Won’t You Give Me Some of Your Love? by Nathan Nicolau is an anthology of original short fiction that bends the imagination and takes readers through bite-sized moments in divergent spaces. In Good Deeds, Sam, an ex-con tending a failing bar, becomes entangled in the quiet removal of its owner after recognizing that a widow had arranged the unthinkable. Mechanics follows a cash-strapped driver waiting in an auto shop, as an elderly veteran dominates the room with talk, ending outside with a twist and a choice. The titular story, Won’t You Give Me Some of Your Love?, is about a museum desk worker with a distaste for most art, whose fixation on the patrons and a portrait coincides with her reassessment of parenthood and abandonment.

Won’t You Give Me Some of Your Love? by Nathan Nicolau is such an excellent collection of stories; all of them brimming with moral unease, intelligence, and the comfort of writing that can only come from the hand of a talented author. While it is impossible to choose a favorite, there are a couple of standouts. The story Returns turns a simple address error into a tightening loop of identity and accusation, using repetition and bureaucratic menace that asks how certainty erodes once everyone else insists on another name. Plummeting watches an everyday witness stare into detachment through quiet observation, pairing the shock of a fall with interior fantasy and chemical calm, until the story suggests that choosing to feel may be the most dangerous act of all. Overall, this is an incredible compilation, and I am absolutely on board for anything Nicolau gives us next.
