Work in Progress by Vivaan Sadare is a heartwarming story that follows Joy Dhoren, a middle schooler as he navigates the challenges of school life and adolescence. The story begins as Joy and his family prepare to host an exchange student for the new semester. Ben, from Spain, is a pleasure to be around, bringing positivity and warmth into the Dhoren household. His departure leaves a noticeable void, but Joy continues to embrace the daily lessons that come both from home and school friendships.

In Work in Progress, Vivaan Sadare explores the transient nature of life where moments and relationships are fleeting yet impactful. Through Joy’s experiences both as a teen and hosting the exchange student, we see how these moments shaped his journey of growth and self-discovery. All of this is presented in a fun and engaging manner, with humor infused into the narrative. Sadare also included a special touch of notes at the end of each chapter, which made me feel like I was glimpsing into Joy’s diary, offering a more personal connection to his thoughts and emotions. I also loved the little illustrations which added visual charm and a delightful break from the text. There were so many valuable lessons to be garnered from this narrative. For me, one that stood out is the importance of being tolerant of differences, embracing diversity, and understanding unique perspectives. I recommend this to fans of heartwarming stories and middle schoolers, as it provides a relatable experience of navigating life during this growth period.
