No Other Gods by Marja Verschoor-Meijers begins with observations of religious diversity during her travels, noting things like Indian restaurants displaying images of Jesus alongside Hindu gods. She contrasts this with her Christian upbringing centered on one supreme being and speaks on the biblical first commandment forbidding worship of other gods despite their existence. Drawing from Old Testament and Pauline teachings, she explains that idolatry along the lines of worshiping statues, nature, ideologies, or leaders divides loyalty from God and leads to spiritual peril. Verschoor-Meijers talks about biblical examples, such as Elijah’s confrontation with Baal worshipers, to demonstrate God’s supremacy. She discusses Jesus’ role in fulfilling the Law and enabling salvation by grace through faith. Warning of demons linked to idols, she leans into loving God fully and warns against replacing Him with powerless idols, urging exclusive allegiance to the living God revealed through Jesus Christ.

No Other Gods by Marja Verschoor-Meijers is a thoughtfully written deep dive into the biblical call to exclusive devotion to the one true God. The writing style is straightforward, clear, and accessible, skillfully connecting scripture with real-world observations, while making certain there is no mistaking the contrast between lifeless idols and the living God. Verschoor-Meijers uses multiple biblical examples and theological citations to show God’s unmatched power, eternal nature, and the central role of love in fulfilling the first commandment. She does a wonderful job of addressing spiritual realities with care, warning about the dangers associated with idolatry and divided loyalties. I found the tone to be authoritative, but unique in how conversational her voice is. There is a great deal of encouragement in how she approaches the special bond between the Christian faith and its foundation in Jesus’ redemptive work. Overall, this is a well-structured and comprehensive examination of faithfulness and the significance of wholehearted worship. Very highly recommended.

In this time of social and spiritual decline, have we moved away from God and, in doing so, inadvertently come to worship false idols? The theme of having only one authentic God is central to No Other Gods by Marja Verschoor-Meijers. The title refers to the first commandment recorded in the Bible, and is a call to remain loyal to the God of Israel. The author draws on her extensive worldwide travel experience to identify some of the gods who compete for our attention. She points out that the Bible records incidents of idolatry, which incurred God’s wrath. Satanist cults have emerged, pagan practices are perpetuated, while symbols, statues, and paintings abound. It appears as if people want a tangible god. Modern forms of idolatry include music, entertainment, television, credit cards, and prescription drugs. Even fancy consumer goods can become gods. Then there are the gods of greed, addiction, and deception. Statues of gods and similar icons in the home can attract dark entities and should be avoided.

Marja Verschoor-Meijers asks searching questions, such as who we should rather serve: an authentic God or any of the variety of deities and manmade things. Who do we worship and who do we trust? Have people lost touch with God, and is there a movement towards ignoring the commandments? No Other Gods is an invitation to reflect on the one true God and to put God first in everything. This is the tenth and final book in the Ten Commandments Series that the author has written over 19 years. This volume repeats stern warnings from the Bible about the dangers of having false idols. Meditation topics are provided, with space for readers to add notes. The author points out that many of the ancient gods appear to be angry and do not project love. She remarks on the coldness that she encountered during her visits to various temples around the world. In contrast, God is powerful and forgiving, while statues and icons are neither living nor merciful in themselves. We should act out of love and not be tempted by false gods. An appendix is provided that lists the 10 core values of Christianity, which are particularly well presented. This book is easy to read and will provide inspiration and insight for Christians.

It does not take much to see that the current generation is losing touch with God and perhaps faith. It is disconcerting how tolerant this generation has become of sin. There seems to be moral and spiritual depravity even among people who claim to be walking in and spreading the ways and the word of God. Knowingly and unknowingly, many have committed to worshiping worldly things, which, also without their realization, open spiritual doors to ungodly entities. Indeed, what a terrible price to pay for ignorance. In No Other Gods by Marja Verschoor-Meijers, Christians and other believers are reminded that God is the Supreme being of all, and only He is to be worshipped. Most importantly, they are given tools to help them accept God and live the life He intended for His creation.

Marja Verschoor-Meijers’ No Other Gods is a must-read for all Christians. The author expertly approaches this discourse with an open mind and a candid, unbiased tone. The biblical interpretations, accompanied by anecdotes and historical references, were enlightening and eye-opening. There are also thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter to help readers in self-reflection and understanding the main message in the book. The Bible acknowledges that other gods exist, but only the God of the Israelites is the true and supreme being, and only He must be worshipped. I got a deeper understanding of the relationship between Christian living and the laws of the Bible. It all comes down to your love for God. You can only accept His forgiveness and live the life He intends for you through loving Him wholly.
