Yesterday Again, a Christian romance by Delia Latham, spins a story of love and loss: a whirlwind romance and wedding in beautiful Yosemite Park, a husband who disappears the morning after, and a heroine who must deal with her grief and then move on with her life when he doesn’t come back. There is also a child, conceived on their wedding night. When Grant and Hannah meet again, sparks fly, and she knows what they mean, but he doesn’t understand them. Gradually Grant’s “Swiss cheese” memory is restored, and his story is revealed. Because Vanna is a devout Christian who turns to God to guide her life on a daily basis, forgives freely, and is willing to trust her future to God, she is able to help Grant in his search for the important missing three weeks that his memory has kept from him, and also to restore his own faith. The result is a happy one for both of them, and for Davey, the son Vanna has raised alone, whom Grant only meets at the tender age of three. This story evokes memories of the film "Random Harvest", in which two very sympathetic characters must discover each other again after a devastating accident robs the man of all memories of the woman he has married.
Latham writes this story with a clean, very readable style and creates likable characters, good and decent people we’d all like to have in our lives. Some descriptions of the handsome and beautiful characters are a bit cliched, and we don’t reach the happy conclusion of the story without a great many tears shed by the heroine. These are not unusual elements in any romance genre, but some judicious edits and rewrites would have made this book even more engaging, and perhaps the tears might then be shed by thoroughly invested readers. The love story, and indeed some of the most critical scenes of the story, take place within the breathtaking setting of Yosemite National Park. The Park serves as a great backdrop for a bigger-than-life romance, and it enriches this one with its unique ability to inspire the characters with reverence for God’s creations. With the romantic conflict resolved, due to Vanna’s never-failing faith in herself, her God, and the people she loves, Yesterday Again accomplishes its goal and delivers a satisfying story for readers of Christian Romance.
