All it takes is a bowtie to brighten a Yeti’s day. In Yetis Don’t Wear Bowties by Janice Hostetter, readers are taken on a delightful journey full of whimsy, warmth, and surprise. It begins with Yeti eyeing the bowties after being offered one. They’re weird, they’re small, but he can’t stop himself from being curious about them. Though he’s very hesitant at first, he decides to try one on. Yeti soon discovers the joy of wearing something new. His confidence grows after wearing a new tie for each activity. Then he realizes something very important. Sometimes, trying something new is the first step to great things. Bright, playful rhymes and expressive illustrations make this book a read-aloud treat from start to finish.
From an educator’s perspective, this book does more than charm its readers with a likable yeti. On top of that, it's a fun tool for supporting their emotional development by subtly encouraging children to try new things. By extension, it also inspires kids to give change a chance and to celebrate their individuality. It could easily be used for lessons and discussions on confidence, friendship, feelings, and maybe even asking a playful question like: "Where would you wear a bowtie to, and what color would yours be?" The cheerful, full-page pictures by Pixy Petal are jam-packed with bright colors and are perfect for the silly tone of the story. Whether you're a teacher, parent, or story time enthusiast, Yetis Don’t Wear Bowties by Janice Hostetter is a delightful addition to any child’s bookshelf. With a lovable Yeti leading the way, kids will learn that sometimes the most minor changes—like a bowtie—can bring the biggest smiles.
