You Stole My Name: The Curious Case of Animals with Shared Names is a children’s picture book by Dennis McGregor. Full-color illustrations are accompanied by rhyming verse. Each illustration depicts two animals, one of which shares the name of the other, such as the zebra and the zebra finch, the mule and the mule deer, the turkey and the turkey vulture, and the bull and the bull trout. These animal pairs may share some attributes such as both being birds (the chicken and chicken hawk) or both being reptiles (the alligator and the alligator lizard), but others differ significantly in species and size such as the rhinoceros and rhinoceros beetle, the spider and the spider monkey, and the tiger and the tiger shrimp.
In You Stole My Name: The Curious Case of Animals with Shared Names, author and illustrator Dennis McGregor gives us a beautiful presentation of animals that are oddly paired by their names. The utterly captivating illustrations are highly detailed original gouache paintings that both adults and children will appreciate. I could easily look at them for hours, and each offers opportunities for adults to instill an appreciation in young children for the wonders of nature. The four lines of verse for each illustration, written from the perspective of one of the animals in the pair, are fun to read. Children will enjoy the rhyme and bouncy cadence of the words as they learn something about the animals in the pictures. A wonderful gift. Highly recommended.
