Your Actions Change the Score by Megan Halstead is a well-written book that provides readers, particularly those battling trauma, with practical tools to recover their emotional well-being, calm their nervous system, and live a more meaningful life. This book consists of five chapters, each representing a tool for different forms of emotional regulation and renewal. Megan starts by discussing the importance of being present in the moment and the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. This technique can be applied in various real-life situations, including during a panic attack, while driving, and others. She further discusses self-compassion as another tool, which consists of three components, including self-kindness, mindfulness, and common humanity, according to Dr. Kristin Neff. Other tools discussed include cognitive reframing, somatic reset, and value-based micro-actions.
Considering the rising mental health issues as a result of stress, anxiety, and trauma, which are more prevalent in the world today, I do not take the positive lessons I learned from this book lightly. The section that discussed intentional breathwork and rapid reset appealed to me. I commend the author for the extensive research invested in this book. Furthermore, the references further authenticated its content. The scenarios at the start of each chapter were great, and made the content more engaging and easier to relate to as I read. The writing is concise, well-paced, organized, and easy to comprehend. Themes featured include self-awareness, nervous system regulation, mental health, intentional living, and more. I recommend Your Actions Change the Score by Megan Halstead to anyone struggling with any form of stress, trauma, or anxiety.
