101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques: To Inspire Your Fiction and Strengthen Your Craft is a non-fiction Writing/Publishing guide written by Ronda Hinrichsen. Hinrichsen is an established author who writes traditionally published romantic suspense and speculative works. In this guide, she discusses setting, character development, and plot, but she also includes tips on how to incorporate writing time into your life and shows how writing down every storyline or creative thought while it is fresh in your mind can increase your writing repertoire. While she cautions that you should be familiar with what you are writing, she does suggest you broaden that base of familiarity, especially with regards to settings. Readers, she argues, love to experience new and foreign locales through the eyes of the characters they are following. Each of the 101 tips is presented in a brief, capsulized format for ease of access and retention. Hinrichsen also includes an appendix listing her personal top ten writing references.

Ronda Hinrichsen’s non-fiction Writing/Publishing guide, 101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques, is filled with handy tidbits of information for writers which is presented in a very accessible format. While I have a number of writing books which I’ve never managed to finish reading, I found this guide delightful to read and quite informative. I like the streamlined format and the order in which the topics are presented. While Hinrichsen does not profess to be an expert on writing and publishing, she does share many of the techniques and tips that have worked for her and others. I particularly appreciated her chapters on plotting and character development for their breadth of information in a compressed form, as well as her advice on how to maintain a positive attitude about working through edits and finding a writing group that fits your style. 101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques: To Inspire Your Fiction and Strengthen Your Craft delivers what its title promises, and it does so quite well. It’s highly recommended.

101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques To Inspire Your Fiction and Strengthen your Craft by Ronda Hinrichsen begins with an exhortation to authors – keep on learning and improving. The perennial problem of writers, getting fresh ideas and new plots, is then discussed. To write is to rewrite, procrastination is a big enemy, and intuition is the sixth sense all writers should have are a few of the many gems Ronda’s book discloses. How a character with a flaw appears more natural, and, in place of ‘telling’ or ‘showing’, an author should ‘create’ the scenes are some of the ‘patentable’ pearls of this collection. It ends with advice I badly needed: ‘Don’t hold yourself back thinking of an imaginary success line to cross. Claim your title as an author now.’

101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques To Inspire Your Fiction and Strengthen your Craft by Ronda Hinrichsen makes success as an author more attainable. Many of the suggestions in this book are just extensions of commonsense and easy to put into practice, making this a recommended and handy book for prospective writers. The reflections of the author on topics like new ideas for a book, thinking always of the readers’ wants while writing, and ways to ensure ‘word of mouth’ publicity raises the stature of this guide to an authoritative document. A thoughtfully crafted, easy to read and well presented handbook that can be a constant companion to all those engaged in ruminating for a living, like writers do.

This book taught me several important techniques to follow in order to make my writing process smoother and more productive. The top five writing tips that stood out the most to me were the following: to always have a pen and paper nearby so that I could jot down important ideas that popped into my head at any given moment; to have an intriguing opening sentence to pull readers into my story; to make my characters realistic by giving them a flaw or two; to never make my story boring; and being careful not to info dump.
