101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques: To Inspire Your Fiction and Strengthen Your Craft is a non-fiction Writing/Publishing guide written by Ronda Hinrichsen. Hinrichsen is an established author who writes traditionally published romantic suspense and speculative works. In this guide, she discusses setting, character development, and plot, but she also includes tips on how to incorporate writing time into your life and shows how writing down every storyline or creative thought while it is fresh in your mind can increase your writing repertoire. While she cautions that you should be familiar with what you are writing, she does suggest you broaden that base of familiarity, especially with regards to settings. Readers, she argues, love to experience new and foreign locales through the eyes of the characters they are following. Each of the 101 tips is presented in a brief, capsulized format for ease of access and retention. Hinrichsen also includes an appendix listing her personal top ten writing references.
Ronda Hinrichsen’s non-fiction Writing/Publishing guide, 101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques, is filled with handy tidbits of information for writers which is presented in a very accessible format. While I have a number of writing books which I’ve never managed to finish reading, I found this guide delightful to read and quite informative. I like the streamlined format and the order in which the topics are presented. While Hinrichsen does not profess to be an expert on writing and publishing, she does share many of the techniques and tips that have worked for her and others. I particularly appreciated her chapters on plotting and character development for their breadth of information in a compressed form, as well as her advice on how to maintain a positive attitude about working through edits and finding a writing group that fits your style. 101 Pocket Writing Tips & Techniques: To Inspire Your Fiction and Strengthen Your Craft delivers what its title promises, and it does so quite well. It’s highly recommended.
