Is it possible to really like a serial killer? If that killer is Britney Cage, the star of 13 Reasons for Murder: Meathead by Amanda Byrd, the answer is an unqualified “yes”...at least for me. Britney is the oddest and, in some ways, the funniest serial killer I’ve ever encountered in a novel, and quite frankly, she’s unforgettable. After all, what serial killer’s best friend is her screeching cat, Minion? And what serial killer lets herself get sexually involved with a cop whom she believes thinks she committed the latest murder? And what serial killer shoots said cop in the foot when he’s waiting to romance her in her condo, and then manages to get him put away for unlawful entry to her home? But then, as weird as all that is, typical of serial killers, she feels no remorse. In fact, she feels utterly justified. After all, her lover cop’s violation of her home is far worse than her drugging and killing anyone she feels is just plain rude, right?
The character of Britney Cage is quite mesmerizing as she comes to life under Amanda Byrd’s pen. Much of the story takes place in Britney’s somewhat disorganized and addled mind, meaning, stylistically, the novel relies less on plot and dialogue than on reflective narration. In the hands of some authors, narrative reflection can get bogged down because the point of view is so one-sided. Happily, that never happens in 13 Reasons for Murder: Meathead. Instead, I found the book hard to put down and am keen to read the next in the series. And rest assured, as the novel closes, Britney has already found and is ready to stalk her next victim. Ahem...victims! Watch for it. Thanks, Amanda Byrd, for a most enjoyable read.
