Wanderlust by Dawn Schout is a poetry book filled with easy to read and easy to understand poems about a wide range of topics. Some of those topics include cats, husbands and wives, a flight attendant, and hiking in the Colorado river. But even with the simple topics like hiking, there is so much more conveyed in the lines. The poems are actually about love and lost opportunities, wanting to put down roots or to be seen, overcoming fear and loss, and triumphing when there is sorrow in a person's life. These poems are as inspirational as they are simple and a delightful read for anyone looking for a pick-me-up.
I really appreciated that Dawn Schout used punctuation and interesting spacing to keep the poems in Wanderlust exciting. There are excellent descriptive words used like "pie-shaped" and "cloud-dappled sky." Those words were so unique and evocative that I immediately could see exactly what the author wanted me to see and, for me, that is the sign of a great author. I really enjoyed the descriptive phrases within these poems.
I only wished the poems had a little more consistency to them. When reading a book of poetry, it is nice if there is a theme that holds the poems together or a sort of progression that takes place within the "book." Even if the poems had different, individual voices that would have made each poem stand out from the other one. But, overall, it is a very good book of poetry that I am happy to recommend!
