Mrs Barnes by Gwyn Bennett is a fast-paced thriller starring Mrs Barnes, a diligent housewife devoted to her family. Once an ambitious career woman filled with passion for her publisher job, all she does now is worry about her teenage daughter, Liv, and her husband drawing away from her. At forty-something, Mrs Barnes feels unfulfilled, as if her life has no purpose. When David invites potential business partners over, she knows exactly what’s expected of her— compliance and a cooked dinner that will take hours to prepare. But what should’ve led to a signed deal turns into a night of horrors, as Ariana and her thugs show their true colors. However, they’ve grossly underestimated Mrs Barnes, and she’s about to show them exactly what she’s made of. This is her house, her playground.
Once eager to take the world by storm, Mrs Barnes had become complacent in her role as a mother and wife. She had let her voice be drowned out to appease her husband, but the threat to her family awakened an underlying fierceness, and her transformation gave me an adrenaline rush; I couldn’t wait to see what Mrs Barnes would do next! As a fast-paced thriller writer, Gwen Bennett knows her stuff. I was hooked from the moment Ariana turned. The chapter countdowns also created a great sense of anticipation. I loved how Mrs Barnes reminisced about past lessons and applied them to her current situation; it was endearingly beautiful as I got a glimpse of who she was growing up and how she became the woman she is today. Mrs Barnes, the character, is highly relatable as we all have days when we question ourselves. Her love for her family ran deep, and it showed. Empowering and compelling, Mrs Barnes is for the mothers who’ll do anything to protect their family.
