In Getting Ready for My Brain Surgery by Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward, we follow a young child dealing with some very confusing physical hurdles—from stubborn headaches and dizzy spells to an arm that feels tingly. When the doctors explain that the brain needs a special kind of help to address issues like fluid build-up or disorganized electrical signals, the child begins a step-by-step journey through hospital prep. This includes everything from getting brain scans to a hair-scrubbing routine the night before the big day. Once at the hospital, the child meets a team of friendly experts and a world of beeping monitors and anesthesia given through a soft mask. Can the child handle the new sights and sounds of the operating room and finally get their brain back to feeling its best?
In Getting Ready for My Brain Surgery, Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward delivers a supportive children's picture book that is a useful tool to help demystify a major medical event. The book follows a logical preparation timeline, but the delivery is so gentle that the medical steps feel manageable rather than frightening. I really liked how the author keeps the explanations really simple and honest, replacing complex medical jargon with words a child would actually understand. Moch. Fajar Shobaru's illustrations of hospital equipment, like pulse oximeters and blood pressure cuffs, are drawn with clarity, helping take the fear out of seeing them in real life. The book is focused on practical reality, highlighting exactly what the young patient will actually feel and hear. I recommend it to any parent, guardian, teacher, or nurse who needs a clear, comforting way to explain neurosurgery to a child.
