In Pamela S. K. Glasner's Journey Key, Nora's existence is defined by the repetitive chores in her home and the demands of her dismissive husband, Lyle. Life in Winter Falls takes a sharp turn when a loose floorboard reveals a tin box containing a key and the word 'journey' written on it. Their neighbor, Jeanette, reveals that she's a Preceptor; someone who will help prepare Nora for her new role as a Keeper. While kneeling by her bed for evening prayers, Nora vanishes into thin air in mid-sentence, leaving Lyle behind in a silent room. She is pulled into a cycle of different identities across history, where she must confront difficult moral traps and complete specific missions to break a centuries-old curse. If she can't find a way to end this cycle, her three-year-old toddler, MaryJane, is already destined to be the next victim taken by the key. Will Nora's transformation be enough to save MaryJane from suffering the same fate?
Journey Key by Pamela S. K. Glasner is a supernatural adventure that kept me turning pages late into the night. The contrast between Nora’s mousy domestic life and the intense identities she assumes in the other timelines is quite a jolt. The mystery of the key being sentient is one of the book's most compelling features. The story is intense by pairing Nora’s ancestral issues with the chaos Lyle experiences after she disappears. Jeanette is an excellent mentor, contributing hidden knowledge to the rural setting. The threat against MaryJane fuels the plot, making Nora’s actions feel very critical. Overall, seeing Nora develop from a passive wife into a woman with an important purpose is a satisfying character arc. The tie-in with the educational workbook at the end makes this a versatile read for younger audiences, too. Fans of historical mysteries will enjoy this book. Give this story a read if you like fascinating mysteries that span generations.
