The Piper's Wake by Sierra Storm follows Carmen, a young woman living a lonely, rigid life out in the soggy, fog-laden woods of Batriva. While her very strict witch-hunting grandmother raises her with careful intent, Carmen secretly dreams of escaping her tedious chores to build a better life in a distant European capital. Her dreams shatter when a sudden plague of rodents overruns the village, pushing her community into a panic about winter starvation. Desperate for a quick solution, the town's magistrate approaches a mysterious street performer named Penance and pressures him into accepting a large sum to eradicate the pests. Pulled into a reluctant partnership with Penance, Carmen must face a harsh reality that directly challenges her ancestral beliefs.
Sierra Storm has written a deeply moving story that feels completely original, even though it borrows from fairytales we all know. I was fascinated by the heavy, bleak aura of the story. Between the endless rain, creepy shadows, and isolated setting, this town felt terrifyingly real, but captivating. The author brilliantly avoids the typical fantasy storyline, focusing instead on a much darker theme: the tragic grip of corrupt leaders and family secrets. The prose also has a rhythmic, gorgeous flow that perfectly matches the plot’s riveting undertones. The real heart of the story, though, is watching Carmen and Penance open up to each other. Their fragile bond feels genuine because they are just two broken people trying to survive a town that treats them like disposable tools. If you are a fan of moody, gothic fantasy books or endings that leave you staring at the wall in deep thought, The Piper’s Wake is an absolute must-read. Recommended.
