Sometimes the biggest questions come from the smallest creatures. In The Starfish That Wondered by Megan Sheridan, a little starfish named Stella has a lot of questions about the sea. She lives near the fish in the coral. Why can they go so far out while she can’t? Stella decides it’s time to find out for herself. It doesn’t take long before something new catches her eye. One of the first things she spots is a shell. What is it? A snail soon pops out with the answer. Stella isn’t finished exploring yet. There are dolphins to meet, a crab to talk to, and other ocean animals to see. And, of course, she wants to know all about them. What do they eat? How fast can they go? She’s learned quite a lot, but there’s more to discover. What else will she find?

The Starfish That Wondered by Megan Sheridan is so cute. Stella won me over right away, and her curiosity was my favorite part. Even the small detail about her having five arms stood out to me because children will learn something new while enjoying the adventure. I could just picture kids counting to make sure there are five, too. The rhyming text was fun, giving the story a nice flow for reading aloud while helping young readers practice hearing similar sounds. As a teacher, I’d use it in a kindergarten or preschool classroom during an ocean unit. Afterward, we would talk about Stella’s new friends, and I’d have each student decide which one they like best. Then they could make up a rhyme about it and draw a picture. The watercolor-style illustrations are another highlight. They create such a peaceful feeling. I loved the mix of soft blues and bright oranges. Anyone looking for a children’s book about the sea, its animals, or discovery will want to pick this book up. I could easily see this story finding a place in a school or home library.
