It is 2550. Humans have spread into space, colonizing hundreds of worlds. The Human Systems Alliance (HSA) has been governing this vast network of planets for generations. However, for three decades, the HSA has been stuck in a brutal war with the Ascendancy, a powerful alliance of alien civilizations with thousands of light-years of territory. Having joined the military service as barely a teenager, twenty-four-year-old John Talon is among the many that the HSA has been recruiting and training in preparation for the war. Now the leader of Dragon Squad, John has successfully led them through all the training on Earth, and they have been cleared for their first operational assignment on planet Avalon. The squad is excited about the news, particularly John and his girlfriend Paisley, a squad member. However, they have no idea that awaiting them on Avalon is the largest attack ever by an Ascendancy fleet. Will they survive it? Find out in The Last of the Dragons by Alaric Pendragon.
If you are looking for a sci-fi novel flavored with high-octane action, drama, adventure, military intrigue, thrills, and suspense, The Last of the Dragons by Alaric Pendragon is a perfect pick with an enthralling cast, steady narration, and vivid depictions. I could have been watching a Hollywood sci-fi military action movie, and I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference. Pendragon masterfully balances the characters’ personal struggles and plot development, making every decision and move in the story high stakes. Between following John and Paisley’s turbulent and passionate romance, the dangerous training and simulation sessions, and the unpredictable interactions between the characters, all against the backdrop of the ongoing bloody cosmic conflict, I was hooked. The dynamic conversations revealed the cast’s personalities and emotions. I enjoyed the banter and camaraderie between the Dragon Squad members. John has been training intensely, yet he might not be ready for reality: the war is ruthless. I hope this is not the last I’m reading about John.
