The Elf’s Secret is a children’s book written by Rosita Bird and illustrated by Sarah Waterfield. Robin was the newest elf in the village of Tralado. He was very shy and miserable around all of the elves and goblins in the village and they could not understand why, as they were so welcoming and friendly. When a hot day arrived, all of the elves went swimming, but Robin sat on the edge of the pool and looked ever so sad. When an elf named Jason asked what was wrong, Robin showed the button on the front of his belly and said that he wished it was gone, as it made him feel so different. Wanting to help, Jason sought out advice from others in town to see what he could do to have Robin’s button removed. Atop a hill, they met with a wizard who was happy to oblige, but the secret of the strange and mysterious magical button becomes immediately clear. Robin regrets having his button removed and requests that it is put back on. He is then shocked to discover something about all of the other elves that he had never known before.
Rosita Bird’s tale of an elf who was miserable because he thought he looked different was an absolutely delightful read. The beautifully drawn color illustrations brought the story to life perfectly, complementing each and every page. The Elf’s Secret teaches the reader that being different doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and that sometimes what we think might be different is not different at all. It was heartwarming to see so many friendly elves wanting Robin to be happy and trying to solve his problem so that he would no longer be miserable, regardless of the risk or consequence to themselves in doing so. What Robin learned was that all he had needed to do was ask for help and it would be there for him. Not talking about the problem created a whole new problem in itself. The Elf’s Secret is an excellent fable with many valuable lessons. I feel this book would be ideally stocked in school, home and kindergarten libraries for story time. I look forward to more books from Rosita Bird in the future.
