Zhanna Hamilton’s 99 Business Idioms and Phrasal Verbs is a very useful book for people looking for a concise alphabetical list of expressions which are useful in business settings and also in informal settings. Every language has its list of expressions that are conveniently and conventionally used. However, a foreigner to the English language could find it daunting to understand their meaning and usage.
Zhanna’s book provides 99 such expressions and gives ample examples of how they can be used in sentences. This book is also useful for native speakers who may be looking to gain a more thorough usage of their own language. This book is particularly useful for those who need a conversational command of the English language in professional and casual settings. I found it not only applicable to the business environment as the title suggests. Since the expressions are in alphabetical order, it is likely to be useful as a reference book.
Being a native speaker of English myself, I found many of the expressions listed to be those that one can pick up through regular use. However, it is also obvious that beginners may find these expressions and examples very useful for their own conversations and for understanding what is spoken around them. Thus, I highly recommend the book for people who are learning English. Zhanna Hamilton certainly has listed essential phrases and thus this book is more approachable than longer books which are more comprehensive but less concise. It is the sort of book that can be used for regular practice in a classroom or by oneself.
