A Barnyard Christmas by Donna L. Martin is a fresh-off-the-farm take on The Night Before Christmas. You will not find any humans starring in this tale, but rather, pigs, sheep, and chickens are just a few of the characters. There’s even a border collie featured, no doubt to keep the sheep in line. All the barnyard animals are in awe of the magical joy and presents that Santa “Claws” brings them on Christmas Eve. The sheep, pigs, horses, and goats celebrate by indulging in a feast and dancing. Clever rhyming phrases make for fun reading. Illustrations by Nimra Junaid complement the story with soft, colorful images that resemble paintings. Children, parents, and grandparents will enjoy this animated seasonal tale.
I smiled and laughed when I read A Barnyard Christmas by Donna L. Martin. I loved the fresh take on a traditional story. It is so creatively written that I found myself rereading it a few times. Initially, I thought the story was just an adorable and silly rhyming poem. But on a deeper level, it may also be a secret peek into what animals of both fur and feathers experience on a mystical Christmas Eve. My favorite part of the book is when, in the barn, the donkeys are playing pin-the-tail on the donkey! I’m thankful that the author has shared her vivid imagination and love of animals through her sublime storytelling. I am not sure she intended to write such a thought-provoking tale. But I’m tickled when a children's book has a deeper meaning than that of a charming story.
