The birch tree is the center of life and has stood faithfully near the house from year to year. In January, it has to brave the cold with bare branches as all its leaves are shed during the autumn. In February things get better, and children go out to play and build castles. Finally, the month of March brings spring and much-needed warmth for the tree. The first migratory birds can be heard singing. In April, the leaves start budding, and by May, they are big and green. The birds that migrated now return, and the cleaning of the bird box is in full swing. Everyone is happy when the warmth of the summer comes alive in June. The birch tree provides shelter for everyone, and even laundry is hung under the tree. What do the other months bring in A Birch Tree’s Year by Tuula Pere?
A Birch Tree’s Year by Tuula Pere is wonderfully written, with a seamless flow of events that leaves no room for confusion for the young reader. I loved the message in the book, like the important role played by trees in our lives, such as recreation and also serving as homes to birds. This amazing work will also teach young readers about the seasons and what happens in each. The wonderful illustrations by Outi Rautkallio made the book effective in passing on the intended message, and I believe they will capture the imaginations of young readers. Readers will also appreciate the excellent narration, which adds to the overall beauty of the work. This is a good story, and I look forward to more by this author.
