A Day at the Berns Family Farm is a children’s picture book, written by Laura Hudgens and illustrated by Larry Hamby. Focusing on spelling – in particular, diphthongs – A Day at the Berns Family Farm is written specifically for children to read out loud, as they practice how two letters which appear side-by-side are said aloud with one sound. With so many animals making their own individual noises whilst going about their daily chores, the Berns family is also busy, sowing seeds to ensure crops for the next season. As a storm rolls in, animals and humans alike are forced to take cover until it passes and the sun comes out again.

Laura Hudgens’ book is beautifully written, showing quite easily how different letters can make one sound when placed together in a word. It also shows the different roles of each of the family and farm animals on a typical day. Having grown up on a farm, I could not help but smile as each of the animals reacted to each other before, during and after the storm. Young children will not only be entertained by the tale, but will delight in the detailed graphics which accompany each part of the story. With so many different animals in the tale, children living in the city will be able to easily grasp the different types of animals which they might encounter in a rural setting. I found A Day at the Berns Family Farm to be well written, beautifully illustrated, and have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful picture book to all age groups which are taking the giant step in learning how to read.
