A Demon’s Quest - The Beginning of the End by Charles Carfagno Jr. is an epic fantasy adventure that begins with Gilex setting the ground work for his plans to awaken the Blood Knights and use them for the good of mankind. The next section introduces Repan, the self-proclaimed Lord of the Mind. With his powers of illusion and magic, he plans on ruling the region. Then the story switches back and forth between two friends, Torhan and Jacko. Jacko is a monk from the order of the White Fist. When Jacko’s return from his promotion contest is delayed, Torhan is manipulated into performing an errand for the mysterious Lord Grappin. Armed with an enchanted sword and dagger, he gets caught up in a whirlwind ride of adventures befitting the brand of Dungeon & Dragons.

Charles Carfagno’s characters are all unique and well described, from different species of fanatical humanoids, monstrous insects, magic, and swordplay to explicitly described martial arts. As a dungeon master of three decades, I was thoroughly entertained. I could easily visualize the rolls of the dice for saving throws when things didn't go in favor of our heroes. Your heart goes out to a character on an urgent mission with a time limit, when he loses his memory after hitting his head during an escape. I like my books smart, well written, gripping, full of action, and with a sense of humor. A Demon's Quest fires on all cylinders from the first page and leaves you wanting more. This is a must-read for D&D and fantasy fans.

"Never underestimate your opponent and don't turn your back on him until the contest is over," said Teacher Ma, a wise trainer of the Order. In A Demon's Quest by Charles Carfagno Jr., Jacko, a young warrior, must learn about the Iron Fist and the Three Finger Techniques as he encounters numerous battles. First, he meets the one-eyed Slyantom, who seeks to kill Teacher Ma because of his vendetta against Ma's father. Then he encounters the chatar, half man and boar creature. Afterward, he reunites with Torhan who has mysteriously gained possession of the scabbard -- a dagger with protective powers. His alliance with Delisar culminates in a rescue attempt to free the women who have been imprisoned. As they run for safety, they find that freedom is at the bottom of a tunnel with no way out.

The gigantic insect and the human warriors trying to slay the beast on the cover of A Demon's Quest is apt. Charles Carfagno Jr. is a talented writer who immediately drew me into a world of seven-foot wolves, the Book of Blood, and a town called Wistful. The pace was fast and the tension was wonderfully unsettling; I couldn't wait to turn the page. I willingly succumbed to his fictitious story depicting another time and another place, interwoven with age-old lessons of honesty, loyalty, courage and patience. Carfagno is a first-time author with a sequel to follow part one. A Demon's Quest is highly recommended.

A Demon’s Quest: The Beginning of the End is a multifaceted and exciting fantasy story by Charles Carfagno Jr. Readers don’t have to wait long for their adrenaline rush to start pumping; chapter one starts with Gilex and his men intend to attack their enemy, Togan. They start their mission by heading towards an ancient place, The Circle of Demise, to get their hands on the hidden treasures and enchanted items. Their journey is rudely interrupted by two huge bug creatures that killed and wounded several of Gilex’s men. As the story progresses, the plot keeps heading toward unpredictable directions; Gilex has an ulterior motive and a frightening secret. The story also takes us to meet Torhan, who is wrongly framed for a crime he didn't commit. Torhan struggles to prove his innocence while being manipulated to join a dangerous quest.

There are numerous characters in A Demon’s Quest, and each of them has been given a substantial depth that shows Carfagno’s deft skill as a writer. I’m not even sure if the secondary characters should be considered as minor characters. They contribute considerably to the story, like little puzzle pieces that complete the whole picture. I have a soft spot for Rustic, one of Gilex’s men, who bravely fought a pack of werewolves that killed his friend. Overall, this is a comprehensive fantasy fiction with sword fights, monstrous creatures, magic and much more. The elements of suspense, action and even drama make this book one of the best fantasy tale that I've read. I really look forward to the next installment.
