Divine Retribution is the third book in Tessa McFionn’s Stria series. Kahlym forced Evainne to return to Boston. She seeks her sensei, Whetutoa, and discovers his true identity. Allegedly dead, Xander travels to Earth through a portal. He had no way of reopening the portal. Evainne insisted Xander help her return to Kahlym. While Evainne was replaying her memories of an intergalactic trip to Bao, Xander told her she had triggered the portal. He tells her to think of Kahlym as they step through the portal. Meanwhile, Kahlym is looking for a transport station on Ontaxa. To the shock of the crew, Evainne and Xander appear before them. Angry with Kahlym, Evainne avoids interacting with him. Xander points out that her stubborn attitude is her weakness. Can Evainne forgive Kahlym for sending her to Earth before the Rimmarian Empire discovers them?
Tessa McFionn increased the tension by adding Xander and increasing Evainne’s strength in this installment. I found her training and discovery of additional powers intriguing. The vision Kahlym had from a seer was an unexpected twist. The crew members picked up the witty idioms from Evainne. I felt sympathy for Panza after his father treated him with disdain. I will admit that I shed tears because of the loss of several characters. The Divines exhibit their powers in Rimma, and I agree with Evainne's disgust toward the idea of marrying old men. The transitions for the alternating views between the characters were flawless. This gave exceptional detail about the action and fight scenes. The italic font used for telepathic messages and thoughts made it easy to distinguish communication from spoken words. The end was exciting, but it left an opening for a sequel. Divine Retribution will appeal to readers who enjoy intergalactic science-fiction adventures.
