"A Fielder’s Choice" is a novel about Art Fielder in Little Bang, Texas, that owns and writes a column on his family owned paper called Fielder’s Choice on various topics about marital relationships, sexual politics, and the family in modern times. His beloved wife of many years, Chic, has passed away, leaving him bereft, lonely, and grieving, while his friend, Professor Marcus X. Kelly, nicknamed Doctor K, just blithely confessed that he murdered his wife, Maybelle. The story then goes on to branch out to many of Art’s quirky friendships and social relationships, from his shrink/friend Dr. Ziggy Schlimfreund to the only other girl he love, Bea, and many others that are in his life.

Lewis Kornfeld’s book is a humorous look on sexual politics and one man’s quest to find love after he has been widowed. There are many hilarious concepts that are brought up in this book that made me laugh out loud, like how memory rage is worst than road rage, bachelor math, and sexagenarians. Readers have to read the book to find out what these terms mean. The book has a lot of witty repartee between the characters that is very subtle in meaning and context. Although the book was written in the current time, the whole tone could have been relevant fifty to one hundred years ago as the subject matter and dialogue transcend different generations as some universal truths about men and women never change. This story reminded me of a Woody Allen type of movie where many characters are followed, everyone having their own story. A good, funny read.
