A Flash of Fire by A.L. Wyss follows Vivian Carmine, an ordinary teen whose life is turned upside down when she discovers she has superpowers. Her powers are destructive because the first time she uses them, she almost burns down the school gym during a science fair. Everyone thinks it is a freak accident and that her robot suit project malfunctioned, but Vivian knows that is not the case. Her body has been feeling hotter, and she has been feeling a fire burning in her. Her parents are not ordinary people, but phoenixes. Unfortunately, before she can learn more, they go missing. Vivian meets Samael, a mysterious customer at her family's book store. Out of options, Vivian joins him and discovers RISE, a secret organization for mythical beings. Her only wish is to find her parents, but that might be a problem because they could be traitors. Join Vivian as she learns about her phoenix bloodline and navigates a new world of powerful beings.

A Flash of Fire is a fast-paced and action-packed story. It is book one in The Phoenix Rising Trilogy, and it lays an intriguing foundation for the series. A.L. Wyss does a great job of giving you just enough information about the characters, but also leaves you with questions about their motivations and plans. Not knowing where Vivian's parents went and who the bad guys were made the story suspenseful. Issues like bullying, friendship, family secrets, and education are included, with a powerful message about the importance of believing in yourself and the magic of books and stories. Vivian is still learning about herself and her family's legacy, and Samael is at a crossroads that might see him taking the good or bad path. I cannot wait to see where the author will take their stories. Overall, this is a wonderful read, and I recommend it to readers of all ages who enjoy fantasy novels about secret superheroes and family legacies.

A Flash of Fire by A.L. Wyss is the first book in The Phoenix Rising Trilogy, and it follows the adventures of Vivian Ann Carmine, a sixteen-year-old girl who learns she is a phoenix with firepower. Vivian almost burned down her school gym with her newly discovered abilities, and her parents have just disappeared after disclosing that they are spies and immortal phoenixes. Samael, claiming to know her parents, decides to help out. The last place Vivian expects to go is a school for mythical beings from books and history. Everything feels surreal, but she also feels accepted. However, she does not trust anyone after she learns that her parents are being accused of working with rebels. Vivian is determined to learn how to control her powers and find her parents to prove their innocence.

A Flash of Fire is an entertaining story that introduces readers to an amazing cast of characters and a compelling story about self-discovery. A.L. Wyss has an interesting narrative style that draws you into the story and makes you feel the characters' struggles and emotions. Vivian tries to adjust to the new changes in her life while being concerned about her parents and their well-being. She's confused about who she is, and her desire to be accepted is a major theme throughout the book. I loved the development of her relationship with Samael as they went from hostile strangers to loyal friends. The book covers lessons on teamwork, friendship, and trust, vital values to instill in young people as they grow up. The story has humorous moments and conversations that will make you laugh, and also tense action that will keep your heart pounding. This dynamic storytelling kept me glued to the book from start to finish. Fortunately, this is not the end of Vivian's journey. Her adventures have just begun, and I really cannot wait to read more books about her in the future.

In a bid to rectify the disaster that is her science fair project, Vivian Carmine chooses to ignore her parents when they share a vital piece of information about their past with her. Circumstances force her to take heed of that curious piece of information when her parents go missing. Vivian's desperate attempts to find her parents lead her to a magical realm with a disturbing secret that could lead to the destruction of everything she holds dear. She must decide whether she is ready to do what is necessary to rescue her parents in A.L. Wyss's A Flash of Fire.

A.L. Wyss's A Flash of Fire is the first installment in The Phoenix Rising Trilogy. The author seamlessly blends contemporary urban elements with Greek mythology in the world-building, creating a unique landscape in which gods and humans interact as equals in modern-day city settings. Wyss immerses readers in the narrative by creating strategic gaps in Vivian's origin story, using intriguing dialogue between Vivian and her parents' friends to connect the clues surrounding her parents' big secret. Drama genre enthusiasts will enjoy how Vivian frequently questions how much of her life is a charade as she interacts with people who know her family secret. The detail-oriented narrative style shines through in the strategic planning between Vivian and her allies, as well as in the intricate battle scenes. Wyss stylishly weaves all these elements together using a graduated pace and a ballad-like delivery in specific parts of the narrative. I look forward to more of this fascinating story.
