Dark family secrets, a powerful dilemma, and hard choices are some of the elements that make A Gathering for Claudette by Robert Fortune an engrossing, somewhat hypnotic read. A break-in by a handsome man sets Jennifer Drake on a path to uncovering her family’s past. But things quickly become more complicated than she had thought. She becomes entangled with two men who played great roles in the events surrounding her birth, two men with different views and a common goal to find Claudette. Will she follow either of the two men who despise each other and who are obsessed with Claudette?
This is a sophisticated story, well plotted, with roots that reach back to events taking place against the backdrop of WWII and the inhumane treatment that was meted out to Polish Jews. Readers are introduced to an intriguing and complex character, Jennifer, whose curiosity pushes her along paths that are filled with both danger and adventure. Readers will enjoy journeying with her and witnessing each discovery she makes of her past. The narrative features elements of mystery and suspense while exploring themes of tragedy, revenge, intrigue, abuse, love, and redemption. The writing captures detailed and vivid images from the setting, allowing readers insights into the historical background of the story.
