A Healthy Mind = Healthy Relationships: Helping my Clients and Readers Achieve Healthy Relationships with Our Creator, Family and Friends by Debra Clifton Mitchell, Ph.D., is a non-fiction self-help guide wherein the author provides a narrative on how the mind works and what the outcome can be in all facets of life, including faith, when the mind is not nurtured properly. Dr. Mitchell employs a series of anecdotal stories and personal experiences to weave together a comprehensive overview of the impact shortcomings and misconceptions about mental and emotional wellness can have. These include, but are not limited to, stunted emotional growth that can lead to personality disorders, a blueprint for recognizing a manipulative individual in one's life, and when to cut the cord and let go. Dr. Mitchell includes scriptural references as they apply to the scenario she is describing.
A Healthy Mind = Healthy Relationships starts off as a relatively straightforward look at the correlation between mental well-being and relationships. Dr. Debra Clifton Mitchell begins the first three chapters with clinical references and examples that come across as hypothetical, tackling the building blocks in general terms while also educating on areas such as an Amygdala Hijack, which was new and interesting to me, and what arrested development actually is. From chapter four onward, the guide maintains its theme but transitions into a slice-of-life self-help memoir, and the author goes into deep detail on the dynamics of her own family, the actions of several family members, and where she sees a mental state that is not, and may possibly have never been, healthy. This extends to the author letting the reader know that her sister and nephew have been gifted a free copy of this guide and that she has offered them free therapy sessions. No doubt there are readers out there who will be able to relate to Dr. Mitchell's experiences even if the circumstances are varied, and I hope they are able to find their way to this resource.
