A King's Return is the first installment of J.J. Johnson's Kingdoms of Islandia trilogy. Years have gone by since Eloy, High King of Islandia, left the kingdom in the hands of Steward King Richard and set off on a quest to seek the meaning of the ancient texts. However, when King Richard is poisoned and murdered by unknown perpetrators, Islandia starts falling apart. It is now up to young Steward King Titus to unite the five kingdoms and maintain peace throughout Islandia. But betrayal and treachery follow Titus while the southern kingdoms fight each other and Valkara's forces in the north move toward the Riverlands. Meanwhile, an ancient foe named the Felled Ones has stirred up trouble once again in the northern mountains. Can Titus hold the kingdoms together until King Eloy's return?

If you're a fan of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, you're going to love A King's Return. Author J.J. Johnson crafts a captivating world filled with political intrigue, betrayal, action, romance, and ancient magic that will make you turn the pages with eager anticipation of what's to come. The narrative is well-paced, and the plot is filled with twists and turns that you never see coming. The cast is quite large, and the author uses multiple POV characters to showcase the various factions involved in the narrative. I found myself particularly invested in the storylines involving Geralt, Titus, Lydia, and Imari. If you're a fan of epic fantasy sagas, don't miss out on A King's Return.
