A Knight’s Love: Medieval Travel Romance (Campbell Brothers Book 2) can be read as a standalone. There is enough grounding for readers new to Ju Ephraime’s series about the Campbell brothers to hold their interest, cleverly written to avoid boring those who have eagerly awaited the story of Garvin. The eldest of the three brothers, Garvin, is unmarried: a Knight Templar who, like the rest, has retreated to Scotland to help Robert the Bruce fight for independence from the English. An attack on his brother’s desirable wife in an attempt to kidnap his nephew arouses his interest in women, and particularly in Lady Helen. However, Helen’s mother is intent on marrying her rebellious eldest daughter into the opposing clan, the MacDougalls. Will Garvin win the lady he loves? Can Helen avoid her mother’s manipulations, or will aroused passions spark deadly clan warfare?
Ju Ephraime has the knack of expressing Scottish dialect in a readable style, and she is a mistress of the art of weaving accurate historical facts with the paranormal, and of creating sexual tension. A Knight’s Love opens with a dramatic attempt to trap the Campbell clan into leaving their stronghold, Inveraray Castle, unguarded and open to invasion by the MacDougall clan, neatly intertwined with Garvin’s first glimpse of the beautiful Helen. She is a strong heroine, uninterested in marriage that will confine her to traditional fourteenth-century womanly pursuits, preferring riding astride wherever she chooses. A Knight’s Love is a scintillating story of graphic passion that holds the reader captivated: “a magnificent explosion like a sunburst.”
