A Lethal Partnership starts with Rick Clark on his way to Peru after a deep loss and some pretty serious health problems. Though his doctor instructs him to avoid stress and give his body time to recover, Rick is on the plane to Lima in order to find out the truth behind the murder of someone very close to him. He’s chasing a missing witness into a foreign land and that’s when this story, penned by Michael Segedy, really takes off. With the backing of a Peruvian general, Rick finds himself assisted by a beautiful special agent as he navigates his way through a city he knows little about to find a suspect who might have the answers he needed.
One of the things I loved most about A Lethal Partnership was Rick. He read like those grizzled detectives with health problems, mental problems, and often drinking problems, but somehow they still manage to get the job done. To get the bad guy. Though Michael Segedy did fill the story out beautifully with plenty of action and drama, it didn’t read like some action flick. The story read like a thriller. A detective novel where you need to read carefully or you'll miss important details to help you figure out it. And the details are where this story shines, from the napkin shifting in the breeze of a ceiling fan to the accent of Neva. As the story unravels, we learn so much about the characters that you feel every triumph and victory, and every devastating truth of those he’s loved and lost. And no political junkie or conspiracy theorist should let this book pass them by because the themes running throughout are enough to keep ideas flying for weeks.
