“Death is an illusion. We can’t die. Our essence is eternal. Your body is no longer alive. It’s impermanent. But as you can see, you’re more than a body.” Moments after her departure from Earth, Ursula is counselled by what will be her spiritual guide in the afterlife. Celine transports Ursula from the surgical environment that monopolized her life for so long to a peaceful, comforting place of observation. Is it Heaven? Is it Hell? There is really no clear definition given, but Ursula finds comfort in her new existence. She also discovers a way in which she is in spiritual contact with her daughter Sabine.

A Light Behind the Door: A Travel Story From Beyond provides comforting words to anyone facing the loss of a loved one, while asking the question of the existence of an afterlife. Author Janka Jakobi streams her personal thought on the subject into this first person narrative that is easily read. Translated from the original German to English by Doreen Zeitvogel with the help of Christine Clover, RN, this reads as an informal journal account of one person’s passing onto a celestial reward equivalent to a modern day science fiction/fantasy plot. I like that Jakobi presents her story more as a fictional account than as a testimonial to the popular near-death experience. This format widens the debate of afterlife existence in a fashion not commonly explored. The reality of Sabine’s reactions to her mother’s illness and multiple surgeries brings Jakobi’s piece together in what I believe is an extremely marketable way. Interesting!
