Pip and the Hungry Chipmunk: How Giving Grows is an adorable book for children and part of Aeva’s Little Wonders book series written by talented author Zaher Arbash. The story takes us to an autumn meadow. As the meadow’s animals prepare for the cold, a little girl, Aeva, and her pet sparrow, Pip, meet a box turtle and a chipmunk. The little box turtle is tired, sad, and hungry in its bare corner. The quick and busy chipmunk has the biggest pile of the sweetest berries, but does not want to give any to the turtle. Then Aeva, singing a Giving Song, gives the turtle berries and seeds from her own satchel. The chipmunk starts thinking. But will the chipmunk share his berries? And what gift will Aeva and Pip discover at home?
When I came across Zaher Arbash’s Pip and the Hungry Chipmunk, I could not take my eyes off the amazing cover illustration. And the whole book was amazing too, both in form and in substance! The page design was tasteful and artsy. The font’s distinct style and large size were perfectly tailored for little children and their parents and guardians. Substance-wise, generosity is often hard to teach children, and this story, in its most entertaining and child-friendly way, accomplished this perfectly by offering a great role model for sharing and helping. In addition, the weekly giving checklist and the Giving Song were invaluable in reinforcing the story’s message. I highly recommend this fabulous book to pre-school and primary school children, their parents, educators, and child carers.
