A Light in the Darkness: A Canyon Rock Series, Book 1 is a Christian mystery/thriller novel written by Patricia Bell. Alexis knew that she was doing the wrong thing, making a huge mistake. Part of her was tempted to go back to Sierra’s house, even though the sleepover had gone terribly wrong. Alexis was never allowed out alone at night, and even the familiar landmarks seemed eerily strange and threatening at this late hour. Even humming her favorite Christian hymns failed to ease her discomfort. She knew she’d be getting into trouble when she got home and wished she had called to ask for a ride home. But she had figured Jake would be sent to pick her up, and the things he told her as he drove her to Sierra’s that afternoon were still bothering her.
The sudden explosion of barking as she passed a house startled her, causing her to lose her balance and twist her ankle. As she limped home, she imagined rabid dogs sneaking up on her and breathed a sigh of relief when a car full of teasing teenagers finally drove away. When he pulled up, Alexis felt as though she had been delivered. He was the man who owned Peanut, a dog she played with all of the time. He would take her home. Alexis, however, had no idea who she was getting into that car with. No one in his present life did.
Patricia Bell’s Christian novel of suspense, A Light in the Darkness: A Canyon Rock Series, Book 1, is an intriguing and well-written police procedural that follows Canyon Rock Chief of Police Erika Granger as she tries to locate a seven-year-old who went missing in the night. Bell’s characters, particularly the plucky and resourceful Alexis and the tormented abductor, Shawn, are finely developed and credible, and her story is fast-paced and compelling. The author’s focus on families and inter-familial relationships also serves to heighten reader involvement in a story that feels quite real. A Light in the Darkness: A Canyon Rock Series, Book 1 is highly recommended.
